Smoother Trails and Scenic Views: Why Penrose Should Be on Your Summer Bucket List

Spring in Story means one thing—we’re officially in mud season. While your boots might not thank you just yet, it’s the perfect time to start planning your summer adventures—and one of the best spots to set your sights on is our very own Penrose Trail (Trail 033).

Tucked into the heart of the Bighorn National Forest, the Penrose Trail is a beloved local gem—ideal for hikers, horseback riders, and even ATV explorers. And thanks to some much-needed TLC from the U.S. Forest Service, the trail is in better shape than it’s been in years.

Restoration Work Done in 2024

Last summer, the Bighorn National Forest team rolled up their sleeves and got to work on not just Penrose Trail, but also North Piney Trail (Trail 112) and Stockwell Trail (Trail 086). The whole project was focused on making these cherished trails safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable for everyone—locals and visitors alike.

Here’s what went down:

  • Trail Surface Improvements: The trail tread was reconditioned, smoothing out the path for a more comfortable trek on foot, hoof, or wheel.

  • Stream Crossing Enhancements: We all know our Story creeks can run high in the spring. These improvements mean safer crossings in wet conditions.

  • Excavation and Brush Trimming: Overgrown vegetation and debris? Cleared out. You’ve got room to breathe and move.

  • Hazard Tree Removal: Dead or dangerous trees that could’ve caused accidents were safely removed.

  • Controlled Blasting: Yep, you read that right, on Penrose Trail, large rocks that blocked the path were carefully blasted and removed. No full trail closures were needed, but hikers were advised to expect a few brief delays while crews worked.

Throughout the process, the Forest Service kept everyone in the loop with updates and information. If you want the latest scoop or want to double-check trail conditions before your trip, be sure to visit the Bighorn National Forest website or give them a call at 307-674-2600.

A Glimpse into the Past – Penrose Trail Ride

If you want a fun peek at the trail before you go, check out a video filmed six years ago by a gentleman riding his motorbike up to “Grandma’s Mountain.” It’s part 1 of his ride, and it gives a great feel for the terrain, the elevation, and the peacefulness of Penrose.

Before or After the Hike – Fuel Up and Wind Down

Story has a few spots you’ll want to visit whether you’re gearing up or winding down after your time on the trail:

  • Story Store: Grab a cold drink and snacks to make a good day, better.

  • Everett’s Tunnel Inn: Hungry? Their meals hit the spot after a long hike or ATV ride.

  • Story Pines Inn: Too tired to head home? Book a room, rest your feet, and stay a while.

So go ahead, lace up your boots and pack your snacks for that Penrose hike during this summer. Thanks to last year’s restoration work, the trail is ready when you are. And whether you’re a seasoned local or a new explorer, Penrose is calling you to come take in the fresh mountain air, right here in the heart of Story.
