Our little mountain community began humbly in the late 1800s, when a spirited horse trader named Marshall Wolf looked to settle in this serene spot. He originally hoped to name the town after himself, but when "Wolf" was already spoken for, he chose to name it after a nearby rancher and friend—Charles B. Story—who helped get our first post office off the ground. That small act of friendship and purpose became the heartbeat of what would grow into the town we cherish today.

Over the years, Story has attracted folks who long for something real. Something rooted. Something refreshing. With towering pine forests, cool mountain breezes, and trails that wind through time itself, Story offers a quiet escape for artists, adventurers, families, and dreamers alike.

In the summer, you’ll find neighbors gathered at Story Days, a beloved local tradition that’s been bringing us together for over 50 years. You’ll hear laughter echo through the pines, smell the BBQ in the air, and see kids running wild and free like they’re supposed to. Throughout the year, community is at the heart of everything we do—whether it's sharing stories around a fire, volunteering for town events, or simply taking care of one another like family.
