Moving Forward with Purpose at The Homeplace Cowboy Church

This morning, I had the absolute privilege of sitting down for a heartfelt conversation with Pastor Ben Horton of The Homeplace Cowboy Church—formerly known as Story Community Church. Let me just say, from the moment we sat down, it was clear this man carries a deep love for the Gospel and a sincere heart to serve the people of Story.

Pastor Horton comes from Oklahoma originally and has lived in Sheridan for some time now, but his mission here in our little mountain town is as bold as it is simple: share God’s Word and support the community. He’s not here to dwell on the past. In fact, when the conversation briefly turned toward leadership challenges under the previous pastor, Pastor Ben said something that really stuck with me:

“We got to put the past behind us so we can focus on the mission of sharing God’s Word.”

And you know what? He meant it. There was no bitterness. Just clarity. Vision. Grace. That’s the kind of leadership we need, especially in these times. When I asked him more about his role as a pastor, he shared a thought that really hit home:

“We go to church to serve.”

In that moment, he began unpacking a truth many of us feel but don’t always say out loud: far too many churches have shifted into entertainment mode instead of preparing the body of Christ to withstand the schemes of the enemy. Pastor Ben is focused on equipping, not entertaining. He’s passionate about building disciples, not just drawing a crowd.

That heart for mission and service was on full display this morning during the Pancakes with the Pastor event. Let me tell you—Story showed up! The fellowship hall was filled with smiles, good conversation, and yes, plenty of pancakes. Folks came out from all over, including a strong showing from Grace Chapel. It was beautiful to see the unity of believers, the shared excitement about building up the local church body, and the genuine curiosity to meet Pastor Ben face to face.

If you haven’t yet connected with The Homeplace Cowboy Church, I encourage you to check them out. Their website is thehomeplacecowboychurch.com, and you can find their Facebook link right there too for weekly updates, encouragement, and community events.

Speaking of events, they’ve got an Easter Egg Hunt coming up at the park, and afterward, everyone’s invited back to the church for more activities and fellowship. It’s a great opportunity for families and friends to come together in the joy of the season. You can find all the details on their website or on the community calendar right here on StoryWyoming.org.

It’s exciting to see new life and renewed purpose at The Homeplace Cowboy Church. Let’s continue to support them, pray for them, and maybe even serve alongside them.
