Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with someone many in Story and Sheridan County already know by sound, if not by name. Rod Jost, a seasoned bass guitarist with a gift for versatility, has become a familiar presence on stages across Wyoming. Whether he’s anchoring the rhythm section for Jeanie Lee & The Reckoning or stepping in with one of the many other groups he collaborates with, Rod brings a steady, masterful energy that elevates every performance.

A Musician Shaped by Passion and Discipline

During our conversation, Rod opened up about his musical beginnings and the spark that first drew him to the bass guitar. What quickly became clear is that his passion is backed by an unwavering commitment to his craft. Rod doesn’t speak about music as a hobby or something that “just happens” he treats it as a discipline.

He talked about his process: practicing consistently, preparing intentionally for every show, and helpful advice about starting with an end in mind when it comes to your own music . His approach is refreshingly grounded. Stay committed and practice.

A Familiar Face in Story, WY

Rod is no stranger to the local music scene. Over the years, he has played at Story Days, the Wagon Box, the Tunnel Inn, and Waldorf A’ Story, venues where locals have come to appreciate both his musicianship and his easygoing presence. If you spend time in Sheridan, you may even find him at Bison Union Coffee, often enjoying a fresh brew in his custom-made Jazz Cowboy mug, crafted right here by one of Story’s own artisans.

The Origin of the “Jazz Cowboy”

One of the highlights after the interview was already finished,  was learning how Rod earned the nickname “Jazz Cowboy.” The story is pure Wyoming charm. Years ago, he played in a band that jokingly created a whimsical theme around wrangling free-range chickens. Playing jazz-infused tunes while embracing this humorous backstory, Rod leaned into the fun and the “Jazz Cowboy” persona stuck. Today, it’s become part of his musical identity, capturing both his style and his sense of humor.

Behind the Scenes: Rod’s Pedal Board & Technique

In the full video interview, Rod not only shared his story but also demonstrated his bass guitar setup, including his pedal board and the equipment he relies on for live performance. His attention to detail is evident, from tone shaping to technique and getting a peek behind the scenes adds an extra layer of appreciation for the professionalism he brings to every gig.

A Grateful Look Ahead

This interview with Rod Jost is part of a growing series of video conversations I’ll be producing for StoryWyoming.org, highlighting local artists, musicians, creators, and community members who make Story such a unique place to live.

As I continue refining the interview format and expanding these features, I want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Rod for his time, his openness, and his willingness to take us deeper into his musical journey.

Enjoy the interview and keep an eye out for more stories from the heart of Story.
