BECOME A MEMBER AND JOIN
OUR MISSION The
mission of the Story Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department is to protect
the lives and property of the citizens it serves by the prompt,
efficient and professional delivery of emergency response services. The
Department is always looking for new members.
Anyone living within the Story Fire District is eligible for
membership. A new volunteer
would be brought on as a New Recruit.
A New Recruit would only attend meetings.
A business meeting is held every second Tuesday and a training
meeting is held every fourth Tuesday.
After showing interest and dedication to the Department by
regularly attending meetings, a New Recruit would be promoted to
Probationary Member. At
that time, you will be issued a pager and all necessary safety gear in
order to begin actively training and responding to emergency calls. At
first when responding to calls as a Probationary Member, you will be
mostly an observer. As you
become more familiar with our procedures and become more highly trained,
you will actively assist with the call, always under the guidance of an
Officer. The length of the
probationary period is at the discretion of the Officers and will depend
upon your attendance and performance at meetings and calls.
When the Officers and Full Members of the department agree you
are ready, you will be promoted to Full Member. The
Department is responsible for emergency response in a 38 square mile
area surrounding Story. We
respond to fires, car accidents, medical emergencies and any other
problem requiring first response to a 911 call.
Approximately 85% of our calls involve a medical situation.
All members receive certified training in CPR.
All members are encouraged to obtain advanced first responder
training such as Basic Emergency Care (BEC) or EMT training.
If you remain a member of the Department for one year following
the training, you will be reimbursed for the cost.
You will receive a basic level of training for all emergency
responses through the monthly training meetings.
In addition, Full Members are selected to attend advanced
training at State run fire schools throughout the year on a rotating
basis. If
you have time to dedicate to the Department, we can certainly use you,
as there are only 6 Full Members at this time (1/1/2012).
However, before you decide to volunteer, we need to explain the
necessity for a commitment on your part.
All Members are expected to attend the twice monthly meeting and
respond to all calls. Of
course, consideration will be given for absences due to work or vacation
schedules, illness or not being close enough to Story to respond in a
safe manner. As a
volunteer, you must remember that the residents are counting on you in a
time of emergency. Emergency
calls will occur at all times of the day and night and volunteering can
be somewhat demanding on your time.
You are encouraged to consider all aspects of family, job and
other current commitments before joining the Department. Story Volunteer Fire and Rescue is a totally volunteer department with no monetary compensation other than a fully paid State retirement plan. However, serving as a volunteer with the Department has other rewards. You will receive necessary training to respond to any number of emergencies. This training may allow you to save a loved one’s life or your own property. You will learn new skills, have the satisfaction of saving someone’s life or property and receive the community’s gratitude. You will gain the confidence of being trained and prepared for any emergency. If you have any questions or are interested in joining, please
contact any of our Members or Fire Chief Mike Onstott (683-2140).
