Story
Garden Club History In March of 1947, Mrs. Jessamine Johnson invited a group of women and myself to her house for tea. On arriving we found Mrs. Pearl Stevens, Mrs. John Smith and Mrs. Zimmerman from the Buffalo Garden Club. These new friends of gardening made us realize we needed a garden club in Story. A later meeting resulted in election of officers; Mrs. Helen Douglas, President; Mrs. Halcyon Scott, secretary; and Mrs. Ethel Nelson, treasurer. We wanted to use our given names but in those years the Sheridan Press wouldn't print our report unless we used our husbands!!! Those signing the charter were Mrs. Jessamine Johnson, Isabelle Whedon, Orma Stratsma, Minnie Craig, Anna Peril, Vera Lutz, Helen Douglas, Marjorie Gupton, Ethel Nelson, Halcyon Scott, Ellen Spear, Bertha Hawkins and Christine Hair. It was decided to have these standing committees: Program, Press and Civic, Courtesy, Exchange and Exhibit, Historian and Entertainment. The name of "The Story Garden Club" was selected. The object of the club shall be to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening among those interested and to aid in the protection of native trees, plants, and birds. The club slogan is "Coming together is the beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success." The club chose to be an educational club, not to be a service club or a money-making club. As a rule, the club does not do community service, with the exception of sending boxes of goodies to boys and girls away from home in the service of their country. On a plot of ground given us by the Story Woman's Club stands a large native stone with a bronze plaque stating what the stone represents...there's a Spruce on either side of, and a flagpole behind the stone which serves as a memorial to boys and girls who served our country. The Woman's Club and many others in the community donated generously for this memorial. |
